Twice the fins, twice the fun

I’ll be the first to admit that my initial reaction to the “rediscovery” of the Twinser style of waveboards was sceptical to say the least. I felt we’d been here before with no great success and as such that the “reinvention of the wheel” wasn’t necessarily a good thing for windsurfing.
Well boy was I wrong !!

The reason for my change of heart is my newly arrived (and already well tested) Fanatic New Wave 86 Twin.

Thanks to WOWI (who are celebrating their 10th anniversary) I was lured to Kerry over the weekend of the 10th & 11th of September and on Sunday evening Gowlane delivered with a good swell and force 4 to 5 cross off conditions. The first thing that was apparent was the ease with which the board cut through the gnarly chop on the outside gybe. Once committed nothing seemed to make it bounce out even at full speed in long planing turns. I’d expected the board to be very back foot sensitive but although there is a “soft” feel when heavy backfoot pressure is applied this rarely lead to spin out. Upwind performance was actually very good once the board was up to speed. If you own any relatively modern short board you’ll know that driving off the front foot is the norm anyway so no real problems there. What absolutely stunned me was the willingness of the New Wave to turn onto & on the wave. I’m no great wave rider but after the smooth bottom turns I found myself getting vertical on the wave before cranking off the top to initiate another bottom turn & then another ! I felt like a superstar ! Whether it looked good from the beach was totally irrelevant .... it felt great ! You really have to try one out to see what I'm talking about !

I’ve since had another 10 or so hours on the board in different conditions in Magheroarty , Donegal. This involved much more upwind work to get to the reef break and some long open ocean blasts out towards Tory Island. Using my Loft 5.0 & 5.7 Lip Waves the board performed immaculately even when well over powered.

My apologies to Oisin and Dave G for being so sceptical about this “new fad” over the last twelve months.
Oisin has been raving about twin fins since he got his first one from JP shaper Werner Gnigler 18 months ago, and Dave was blown away after his first sail on his Fanatic 84 twin last year. Now that I have actually sailed one, I can see what all the fuss is about.
I’ve yet to try Oisin’s new 2010 JP’s, but can hardly wait. In the meantime I’m ordering the Fanatic New Wave 72 Twin for those stronger Autumn days ahead. I’ll let you know how that goes at a later date but you could ask Stephen O’Brien in the meantime as he’s been out having fun on his one !

This is an opportunity for all Loft Sailors (and any Loft curious sailors !) to meet the main man behind this great brand. Sunny Slalom Finals

No wind showed up for the final round of the Irish Slalom Series held in Galway over the 12th & 13th of September. There was no shortage of sun though and we all basked in the unusually pleasant conditions. There was some fun & frolics with SUP / Kayak Team Racing and the Silver Fleet had a few fun races but in general we all took it easy. Which of course left plenty of energy for the Saturday night dinner & party.

Well done to local organiser & ISS driving force Danny Mulryan . I missed a lot of the LATE party but stories abounded on Sunday !!

The perfect weather created a great backdrop for the ISS prize giving after lunch (Thanks Mr Magnetti) on Sunday. As is now the tradition the Junior & Silver Fleets were awarded the bulk of the product prizes with the Gold Fleet making do with the “status”.

City Chase Dublin

Surfdock are part of an event called City Chase Dublin on September 19th. The Dublin City Chase is a unique urban adventure that requires participants to exhibit teamwork, resourcefulness, determination and the ability to make decisions on the fly as they search for ChasePoints scattered in unknown locations throughout the city. ChasePoints are designed to test teams with a variety of physical, mental, and otherwise adventurous challenges.

Part scavenger hunt, part obstacle course, part race, this amazing urban event will see 2-person teams run, walk and use public transit to navigate their way throughout the city, while calling family and friends for help, accessing the Internet, and even employing assistance of total strangers. The first team to complete the required ChasePoints and cross the finish line WINS!!!

It’s a great mixture of laughter, adventure and fun! And what’s best, there is an amazing prize for the winning team, they get to represent Ireland in the City Chase World finals in Argentina this December!!

Registration for this brilliant event is only €85 per team of two. For more information, please check out www.citychasedublin.com and www.citychase.com

Downings RIPS

A record 124 competitors took part in this year’s Downings/RNLI Slalom windsurfing event. Those who arrived by Friday lunchtime we’re treated to a great cruising session right across the bay to Marble Strand & back. Although Saturday didn’t really deliver wind there was some good fun racing and a chance to shower early to get ready for the dinner’n’disco in aid of the RNLI. The forecast for Sunday proved accurate and we spent the rest of the day rigging down to cope with the ever improving conditions. I personally moved gradually from my JP Supersport 127/7.5 Pryde V8/46cm fin to a 42cm fin with loads of downhaul. Then the 6.5 V8 matched with the same board & finally with the JP Supersport 109 !! A well run and memorable event with great emphasis placed on encouraging the juniors ... this is how much fun a windsurfing competition can be. Congratulations to Nick Fletcher and Gartan OEC and to all their helpers.
My personal recommendation for accommodation and great food in Downings has to be the Beach Hotel www.beachhotel.ie . Mairead & Charlie couldn’t be more helpful and windsurfers are always welcome.

Thanks to Stephen Williams for the pictures. More here: http://picasaweb.google.com/stevewIR66/Downings2009#

Loft Switchblade First Impressions

Two different sailors have recently taken delivery of The Loft’s Switchblade 7.8. Their few words say it all. This is one hell of a twin cam Freeride/Race sail.
From Roy Guinan (long time windsurfer & Surfdock customer)
I have to say that I am very impressed with the performance of my Loft SwitchBlade 7.8 sail. The very first day I used it the wind was a bit gusty between Force 3 to 4+ with some stronger gusts indeed some people even managed to get out for a while on 6.0 metre sails but at no time did the sail feel unbalanced. It powers up easily and is extremely stable, at speed it behaves as if there are more than two cams, yet in the gybe it feels closer to a rotational sail. I have used almost every manufactures cam sails (I am windsurfing for nearly 30 years) but have never used a cam sail that has such a good wind range, by which I mean it will power up in lighter winds without having to resort to pumping and yet it has a completely neutral feel when fully powered up. Most sails are biased towards powering up early and poor top end or no bottom end power but very good higher wind range, this sail does it all. I came off the water with a big smile on my face after having a very good day in fairly gusty winds which would normally have put me off even going out, indeed I was so impressed with it that I have since taken delivery of a SwitchBlade 6.8 as well. An added bonus is that SwitchBlades can be rigged on RDM masts which I have done, as well as SDM masts and now only have to carry one SDM mast for my 9.5 as all the rest of my sails can now be rigged on rdm masts, this has reduced the amount of kit I have to drag around and put some money back in my pocket as well.

And from Tom Slomski new Surfdock Team Sailor
Just a few words of feedback from Downings.I have to say that I was very impressed with new freeride/slalom Loft Switchblade 7,8 performance.I had a chance to test it during Irish Slalom Series in Downings in the wind range between 15 up to 30 knots gusts. Conditions were very demanding. Very choppy and gusty!!My first feeling was how light and full of response that sail is.7.8 m Swichblade was rigged on SDM 100% carbon mast with proper manufacturers recommended stiffness. Only two cams but loads of power and control. With adjustable outhaul becomes very flexible in puff and lulls. It is well built and shaped.I would highly recommend it to any sailor who wants to be fast, full of control and early planer.I’m pretty sure that bigger sizes would be even better in light winds.Regards Tom POL-14

Silent Charity Auction & Music Session in aid of CARI

Denise's Inca Trail Charity Walk shifts up a gear on 27th June at 8pm in Poolbeg Yacht Club with a charity "silent" auction & music session.

For directions to Poolbeg Yacht club, please use this link to Google Maps.

So what's a silent auction you ask ? Loads of great items & services (see list above) have been donated by Surfdock suppliers & friends and will be auctioned on the 27th. The "silent" bit means that you just write your bid on a piece of paper & drop it in the box in front of the item you wish to bid on !

ALL the money raised will go towards Denise's CARI Charity and the walk to Machu Picchu.

While you decide what you'd like to bid for there'll be Surfdock's famous BBQ burgers to chow on and a music session.
All musicians are welcome to bring their instruments and join in the craic, with others who are jetting in from all over the country ….. Christy can't make it but sends his apologies !!! Oh yeah, this is a Yacht Club so there is a bar !!

RAFFLE ON 10th JULY
For those of you who can’t make it to the auction but would like to support this very worthwhile cause there’s a very nice RAFFLE going on too !

ONLY 100 tickets @ €20 each with the choice of 3 TOP PRODUCT PRIZES.
Surfers could pick up a 9’4” Naish Woodie Longboard.
Kitesurfers might choose the Cabrinha Convert & Rival Board.
While Windsurfers can go for the Fanatic Board and Rig.

Each individual prize is worth over €1000 !!!!!!!!! Tickets are available in Surfdock & will appear at other events in the coming weeks.
The DRAW will be held in Surfdock on 10th July after a few Burgers & Beers.

Are you coming to the silent auction?
If possible, please email denise@surfdock.ie and let her know if you are planning to attend, as it would be great to get an idea of numbers.

Great Fleadh !

A very belated congratulations to Colaiste Dhulaigh for the excellent job they did in running this year's Fleadh Sheoil. Blessed by what has become "Festival Weather" we all enjoyed sun , wind & craic for three days.

A memorably windy session on Monday produced a couple of good GPS speeds. Oisin took a Neil Pryde V8 & a 5 year old 74 ltr AHD Slalom board to 35+ knots . Yours truly eased a JP Freestyle Wave 92 & a 5.9m Loft O2 Freeride to 32.5 knots. Nothing particularly high tech there so !!

Denise would like to thank everyone for buying her burgers in aid of CARI & her trip to Machu Pichu in October. As a follow up Denise is holding a "silent auction" in Poolbeg YC on the 27th June. There is a huge range of goods & services to be auctioned ... from surfboards to hair cuts & beauty products to wetsuits ! More in a full newsletter soon.

Just into stock is a very nice range of Loft masts. Check out all the info here http://www.surfdock.ie/wind.php?cPath=27_42 . All come in their own bags and prices for a 50% RDM start at €219 & €249 for SDM.

The 2009 Loft Lip Wave & O2 Freeride range is now back in stock in most popular sizes. There are a few 2008 sails still on offer if you fancy a bargain. There are a few Blades available too in FAST sizes ... perfect for burning off your mates on the GPS strip ! Speaking of Blades here's a pic of JK being presented with a Loft Blade 2009. John beat allcomers last autumn to take the Irish Speed Record and win this fast sail ! Although sponsored by other brands JK has promised to at least give the Blade a try... keep me in the loop please John !!

Sponsor me Please

I am going on a trek to Machu Picchu in Peru in October to raise much needed funds for an organisation called CARI who help children who have experienced sexual abuse. I have set up my own website http://www.denise.netii.net/ for cash donations. I am going to hold a silent auction in June or July to try and raise this sum, with some great prizes donated already. I know that it's a difficult year for everyone but this is a well deserving charity and as our wonderful government only give CARI 30% of the funds needed to operate they could do with every penny they can get. If you have any other ideas how I can raise some cash please help me out.
Thanking you in anticipation and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

OISIN GETS THEM LOOPING
If you’ve been putting it off for years (like me !) then get in touch with Oisin, pack your “PMA” and be prepared to have a head cam capture it all in glorious detail ! Apparently with the right attitude and coaching, everyone can loop.... and this proved to be the case when a group of likely lads & one lass took the Looping Challenge with the man himself in Rush on the 10th of Jan '09.

Check out the evidence here on [our Vimeo page].
You can contact Oisin through the details on the video if you want to finally make your Looping Resolutions come true.

Judging by the very positive feedback these coaching sessions will be well attended in the coming months so book soon !!

One day in January... the Video.
And Speaking of Rush Beach... Regular Blogger and budding Spielberg.. maker Andy Radley has been up to it again, this time capturing a very stormy windy day in Rush Beach in January. Most of teh guys didnt bother going to the West Coast... why bother when you can get winds upto 50 knots in Dublin. Apparently hard to sit in the van and video... never mind windsurf !! A few more nice loops here too from OVG. [Check out the video]

IT’S ALL GOOD NEWS.....Surfdock passes it on !
With the strength of the Euro and being supplied mostly in Sterling & to some degree Dollars has made the last few months a challenging period. Most of our suppliers have suffered massive hits on exchange rates and some are initiating in season price increases.
So where’s the good news ?
Well now that the dust has settled it appears that practically all SURFDOCK prices are LOWER than in 2008.
Some of these changes are already apparent on our site and others will change as 09 product arrives in depth. For the best deals keep checking in as we are laoding up new products and prices every day! Here’s a few examples to whet your appetites !

Circle One Booties tested

I'm no fan of wearing booties, particularly when it comes to wavesailing, but when it comes to going out in 4 and 5 degrees celcius at this time of year... then there is not much choice but to get rubbered up!

Anyway, my main issue in wave-sailing is that I really want to be able to get out of the straps quickly if I really have to - when I'm jumping, but most importantly when I'm waveriding. Same thing goes for getting twisted and contorted when freesytyling.

The inability to be able to bail from your gear if you have to, can lead to very nasty injuries - and my knee is the victim of such an accident. Not being able to ditch my gear from a big aerial wipe-out in Kerry years ago, has left me with a crushed meniscus and the need to drive an automatic van, as I have constant pain in my knee, which is aggrivated by using the clutch.

Many boots do the job fine.. but I feel hold me back as they have too much padding and rubber around the sides of the foot... creating too much grip to the board and the footstraps (for my big feet anyway)... and this means I will get my feet stuck.

The 3mm Pryde booties were doing the job great for me, but out of interest I got a pair of the Atan Boots, which are like a bootie that has been dipped in latex, esentially a smoothskin boot.
These were working better, but I found they started to stretch, and because they didnt have any strap to over the top of your foot, I found the heel would contstantly twist, which bugged the hell out of me, and started getting really uncomfortable. Also the smoothskin made them a sticky in the straps.

So Alan gave me a pair of the Split Toe Circle One boots to try out, and I am really impressed. They are basically a neoprene sock, with some kevlar on the sole and slight bit of stick-on Kevlar reinforcing.
The fit is really good, and they are the most flexible I have tried (even at 5mm)
As they are just double lined neoprene, they slip in and out of the straped really easily, and feel quite like being barefoot (in terms of ease of getting in and out). They also have a great strap over the top of the foot, which keep them tight and no movement on the heel or anywhere.
Best of all, I feel as confident as if I was sailing barefoot, which is the most important thing.

Bit of a rambling post.... but as you can tell, I'm suitably impressed!
10 out of 10, I'm keeping these ones!

Oisin.

New Year's Loopers

While the shop was packed full on the weekend because of our sale (which continues until the 24th) Oisin ran a New Year's jumping course over the weekend at Rush Beach.
A short video is posted here of some of the loopers, who finally broke the fear and went for their first ever loops, or sailed away.
Congrats allround!

WELL THERE GOES 2008 !
It’s been an interesting year once again in the watersports business with the weather not entirely playing the game when it came to summer ! This did however mean that most windsurfing events had wind and were well attended & contested. However, the “doom & gloom” media driven situation that we find ourselves in has had the inevitable affect on lives and livelihoods. I’ll apologise now for any shortfalls in stock that may occur in 09 as stock levels are one area that may have to reflect the downturn. There will naturally be no reduction in the service that I and the Team try to offer.

On a positive note I know that there are some great events planned for next year especially on the windsurfing front ... slalom, wave & now speed are combining to bring good & diverse competition to your area soon !!

Also on the plus side interest rates & fuel prices are down. Maybe the trip west for the weekend isn’t over for good ! You’ve got the gear... get out on the water !

And even more positive.... expect some decrease in the overall price of a number of your favourite toys, wetsuits etc in the New Year. That is if our UK suppliers don’t suddenly adjust their prices upwards due to the floundering pound. Let’s hope not.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for supporting Surfdock in the past year and in many cases for the last 17 years !! See you soon or in 2009 !

Happy Christmas from the Surfdock Shop Crew...Alan, Denise, Ant, Aimee & China Blue.
And the Team.. Oisin, Jeff, Noelle, Fintan & Dave .

PRODUCTION BOARD WORLDS, Dungarvan..
Unfortunately the wind didn't blow strong enough, or from the right direction to run official competition at the Production Board Speed World Cup. The sailors were dogged with a week of calm frosty conditions, and promising forecasts that never really materialised enough to make the action happen..
Word is though that all the International competitors were suitably impressed by the course, and could see it's huge potential. There are already plans for an Irish Speed series next year, The Belgian and Danish National Championships in Dungarvan, a possible World Record attempt, and also the Production Worlds again next Autumn.

Dungarvan is on the map ! Congrats to Martin Waldron and all the local crew for getting the event together.
To have a look at a few pictures of the Production Worlds, go to: [http://www.waterfordpeoplephotos.com/] and choose 'Events'. There you will see 3 pages of pictures from the event.

Also,
there is now a video of some speed runs from the Irish Nationals on Surfdock's VIMEO page: [HERE]

Keep an eye on the website, as we add more Christmas Products, and add all the 2009 equipment available with new pricing.
Hope to see you soon !
